16th Annual Peter Medoff Awards
December 9th, 2010
Victory Programs will continue a community tradition!
Nominate your peers for this special honor.
In 1995 the AIDS Housing Corporation (AHC) began presenting recognition awards to members of the community who have made extraordinary contributions in the response to HIV/AIDS and homelessness. These awards are named in memory of Peter Medoff, a founder of AHC, a great friend to Victory Programs and an amazing community leader around issues of poverty, homelessness and HIV/AIDS. The world lost Peter in 1994 however his passion, commitment and spirit endure through the work of so many others who came after him.
While AHC became a program of Victory in 2009 this important tradition continues. On December 9, 2010 Victory Programs and its Technical Assistance Program will present our 16th Annual Peter Medoff awards to individuals who exemplify the spirit of Peter’s commitment to social justice, ending homelessness and advocating for people living with HIV/AIDS. Each year our awardees are nominated by their peers in the community and chosen by a selection committee.
Victory Programs is seeking your nominations for the 2010 Peter Medoff awards. We are asking for your help by nominating those colleagues and co-workers and people in the community that you know who have worked tirelessly to help those living with HIV/AIDS and to create and sustain stable housing for people living with HIV/AIDS and other disabilities.
About the Award
AIDS Housing Corporation (AHC) was created in 1991 by a group of individuals who came together with the commitment, energy, creativity and foresight to create housing for people living with HIV and AIDS. Peter Medoff was one of the founders of AIDS Housing Corporation and was one of the driving forces that helped create the first HIV housing in Massachusetts. Subsequent to his initial involvement in establishing AHC, Peter became ill with AIDS. Peter died in 1994.
To honor Peter’s contribution to AHC and to AIDS housing issues, AHC’s Board of Directors created the Peter Medoff AIDS Housing Award. It was first awarded at our annual meeting in January 1995 to Kurt Reynolds, a long-time advocate for AIDS Housing. The Peter Medoff AIDS Housing Award is a small tribute to the spirit Peter left behind, the strength that inspired so many of us, and the tremendous contribution he made to AHC and in the lives of so many people.
For 14 years these awards were given out at AHC’s Annual Meeting to individuals nominated by the community and selected by the Board of Directors who best exemplify Peter’s spirit and commitment to serving those in need. In 2009 for the first time the Peter Medoff awards were presented by Victory Programs after the creation of a new partnership between Victory and the AIDS Housing Corporation.
Nominees should be individuals who have demonstrated commitment and leadership in addressing homelessness and in helping people with HIV/AIDS and others chronic conditions find safe places to call home. Nominations are accepted for candidates from all over New England.
Nominations are due by Friday, November 12th, 2010.
