Research has established a substantial correlation between substance abuse, child abuse/neglect and juvenile delinquency. This course will provide a background in substance use and abuse, the disease concept and basic neurobiology, and more specifically, adolescent substance abuse. Gender differences, cultural considerations and co-occurring mental health disorders will be discussed. A particular focus will be placed upon integrating coursework into knowledge and skills for working with substance abusing youth in the Child Welfare system. A youth development approach will be emphasized.
Objectives:Upon completion of this program, participant will be able to:
- Identify the boundaries of adolescence and contemporary indicators of those boundaries.
- Identify the working definitions of substance abuse and substance dependence as it relates to adolescents.
- Identify the clinical criteria of Chemical Dependence diagnosis.
- Identify the research based key elements of effectiveness of adolescent chemical dependency treatment.
