Coalition for a Better Acre – Americorps/VISTA Opportunity

Coalition for a Better Acre(CBA) , a community development corporation in Lowell, MA, is recruiting for 1 full-time NeighborWorks AmeriCorps VISTA position for the 2012-2013 program year.  Ideal candidates will

§         have initiative

§         have some college experience

§         have strong verbal and written skills

§         be comfortable with public speaking

§         have desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people, particularly those living in low-income distressed neighborhoods

§         have experience with MS Word, Excel, Publisher, email and internet

Service Description:

CBA’s community organizing efforts aim to build resident leaders and strengthen neighborhoods. We do this through our community outreach efforts, resident leadership development and community organizing campaigns.  NeighborCircles is a resident leadership development program that strengthens neighbor relations and empowers residents to take local action through a series of three structured house meetings. The Lights On campaign responds to community concerns of neighborhood safety by reaching out to residents and businesses to take part in keeping the streets well lit.  In collaboration with ACTION, the Acre neighborhood group and other local groups, CBA is creating community gardens in the Acre neighborhood to transform empty lots into vibrant spaces and promote local food production.

Member Duties:

– Conduct community based research to evaluate how desirable residents perceive the Acre neighborhood as a place to live

– Increase effectiveness of NeighborCircles through program evaluation and coordinating a facilitator training

– Increase effectiveness of the Lights On campaign through volunteer recruitment, research and program development

– Strengthen communication and outreach to members

– Assist with community garden program and new programs as needed

NeighborWorks AmeriCorps VISTA’s will receive a $449 bi-weekly stipend, a $5,550 education award, and professional development and training opportunities. VISTA’s must attend a Pre-Service Orientation by July and begin service in July 2012.
