Gas and electric companies cannot terminate heat related service from November 15 through March 15. The latter date may be extended through April. You should check with your fuel assistance agency to see.

Just about everyone who meets the income guidelines may be eligible. People who live in subsidized housing and pay 30% or less of your income to rent and have heat included in rent are not eligible for fuel assistance.

Otherwise, you may be a citizen or non-citizen. You may pay for your own heat, or it can be included in your rent. You may use any type of heating (gas, oil, electricity, propane etc). Your gross family income must be within limits:

Family of 1             $30,751

Family of 2             $40,213

Family of 3             $49,675

Family of 4             $59,137

Family of 5             $68,598

Family of 6             $78,060

Fuel assistance will pay your heating bills up to your benefit level. If you pay your own heating bills, fuel assistance will make payments directly to your heating company. The payments will be made up to your benefit limit for heating fuel used between November 1 and April 30.

If you are eligible for fuel assistance and are facing a heating emergency, your fuel application will be processed quickly if you have no heat for any reason, if you have received a final shut off notice, if you have less than a 3-day supply of fuel, if you are a tenant with heat included and will be evicted in 72 hours.
